Japanese cavalry saber type 32. The type 32 model 1899 was a machine made weapon manufactured at the tokyo hohei kosho arsenal in tokyo in 2 patterns. However this one went for a lot less recently. A pattern of sword introduced in 1899 and remaining in production until the early 1930 s. The blade is shinogi zukuri with bohi engravings arsenal made blade serial number 74473 stamped. The wood grips are also checkered. There are two type 32 swords and only the cavalry has the leather loop.
The sword length is 38 inches with a blade length of 32 3 4 inches from tip to seppae. The ko sword was for cavalry use while the shorter otsu was intended mainly for foot soldiers. This is a very nice condition imperial japanese wwii type 32 otsu second pattern cavalry saber complete with an original steel scabbard. It was first issued in 1889 and would be crafted until the end of wwii though by the end of wwii where they had been serving in manchuria and china. The type 25 introduced in 1892 have brass hilts and plain wood grips. The japanese type 32 saber was a government issued cavalry sword.
There are two kinds of these guntōes the kō for a cavalry trooper and the otsu for a transport soldier. This is the ko first model which was for cavalry use. The first pattern of which this sword is an example known as ko in japanese was issued to cavalry nco s and had a blade length of 33 inches 83 8cm. It was available in two very similar models ko with a 32 3 4 inch blade for cavalry troops and otsu with a 30 1 2 inch blade issued to other ija enlisted troops requiring a sword for service use.
